(I know I’m a mess of contradictions who can’t make up her mind…) Beyond the beaches, this South Pacific chain of islands boasts a rich culture, adventure and sunsets that are truly breathtaking. 8. Unique traditions
Kava (aka Yaqona or Grog) is Fiji’s national drink, made from the powdered root of a pepper plant. Kava is a mildly narcotic drink which makes you feel mellow and relaxed with a numb feeling in the mouth. It’s a sensation you must experience for yourself to believe!Drinking yaqona has proved to be a great social unifier. Between welcome ceremonies and weddings, this “drug” is as socially acceptable and legal as beer or wine in Western culture. A server will carry a ‘bilo” cup of the mixture to the chief guest, who must clap (‘cobo’) once before and after completely drinking the first cup. The order of serving depends on the status of those present, from the highest-ranking chief down.Fijian girls learn how to weave mats and baskets, craft pottery and make bark cloth for ceremonial and home purposes. Boys learn to carve kava bowls, spears, war clubs and the ever-popular cannibal fork mainly for the island’s busy tourist trade.

While it can be frustrating to wait for food, drinks, or transport, learn to let go and embrace it! Locals say… “The pace here is slower because we believe nothing good ever happens in a hurry, if you don’t stress, it will just happen eventually.” Cheers to that!
