Imagine cruising by long-tail boat amidst emerald waters while dodging mossy limestone formations and soaking up rays of Vitamin C. As you approach the inlets, daunting cliffs tower above to give way to lush beach-front jungle. All while indulging in a day of snorkeling, swimming and relaxation. Must be paradise. The legendary Phi Phi islands are renowned as some of the most beautiful and accessible in the world. Boasting pristine beaches, rainforests, mountains, and seaside resorts, they make for the perfect day trip from Thailand’s southern province of Phuket. Beach bums, divers and party animals rejoice, there is fun to be had for all!
PHI PHI ISLAND HOPPING
There are six islands in the group of Phi Phi. The two largest and most visited being Phi Phi Don, the only inhabited by people, and Phi Phi Leh, which houses a National Park. A ring of steep limestone rocks surround two shallow bays of Maya Bay and Loh Sama.
Lights, camera, action! Maya Bay was made famous after the 1999 filming for the acclaimed movie The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a backpacker. Darn, I arrived 16 years too late.
“You fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone’s so friendly. It’s such simple stuff, but… If I could stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I’d restart it like this. For everyone.” – The BeachCoral and colourful reef fish makes for a favourite spot for snorkellers and first-time divers. I recommend going early in the morning because this island gets packed through out the day!
Phaya Naak Viking Cave
The cave was aptly named for the prehistoric drawings that were found on the cave walls that resemble ancient viking ships by gypsies or pirates who stopped here to shelter from the monsoon storms. The cave is inhabited by thousands of birds called swifts that make their nests out of saliva, which are later harvested and sold to make birds nest soup, a Chinese delicacy. The edible bird’s nests are among the most expensive animal products consumed by man.
Loh Samah Bay
Can it get any more serene?
Paradise is calling. Will you answer?
